5 Things I Wished I’d Known As A Newbie

Adding wp-admin/ onto the end of your blog URL brings you to the dashboard for your blog. This one I learned this week…yeah would’ve been great to know earlier on but hey, now I know.

You can search your media…again would’ve been useful to know this early on. Instead of scrolling through my media for the relevant images, it’s also why you should name your images when you upload them to WordPress. That way, it’s easy to find them again.

Building on the second point I made, book reviews or just any images of books. Don’t copy and paste them, don’t do what I’ve been doing cause you were paranoid about filling up your storage space and wondering how to find them again in your media. Save them to your computer, upload them to your media files, RENAME the file if you need to and HOORAY you’re sorted. You can now search for that book again whenever you need it, without having to reupload it or copy and paste it. (which isn’t something you should do – you can end up with broken images and yeah…)

HTML isn’t needed to start a blog, it’s useful to know but you tend to learn it as you go. Plus if you’re stuck, there’s plenty of bookbloggers and other bloggers who’ll come to your rescue.

It’s ok to be clueless. I feel like you dive into this world, and think you should know everything straight away, cause everyone else seems to know what they’re doing. We were all newbies once, and unlike a lot of other communities. We’re not really in competition with other blogs, in fact we’re all super supportive of each other. Spreading the l love, helping one another out cause we’re in a similar boat. We’re bloggers, we wear many hates, we have lives and life doesn’t always let us to everything we want to get done.

Why My Colour Scheme Is Pastel

Ok so for those of you who’ve been around from the birth of this blog, you’ll have noticed I’ve always stuck to pastel colours for most of the graphics. With the new redesign pastel plays a huge role in my colour scheme, there’s a few reasons behind this. As well as why my blog background is a pastel teal with the banner including a pastel purple.

I hate bright things. It hurts my eyes, and when I blog hop a lot of you go for pure white backgrounds. As a Graphic Design student, I get why you go for pure white, it makes everything look nice. Everything stands out and it’s not an issue. Except not everyone runs with the latest technology, I use old laptops, meaning white…is pretty darn blinding for me. A lot of us are also going to be working on stuff during the night, when the light is poor anyway, and having bright colours on a screen is going to slowly damage your eyes. If you want a white background try going for an off white like Ivory. It still appears white but it’s dulled slightly, yet for me and many others that makes it’s so much nicer to look at.

Now I knew I needed colours that would allow my graphics to pop, yet also…that they weren’t so bright it was like a slap in the face every time someone clicked onto my blog. Pastel colours my friends, they’re underrated. Now my pastel colours tend to be at the point of nearly losing all colour, because it means everything else on top of it can stand out. Yet it also allows the tint of colour on the background to show through. For me it’s pleasing to the eye. The ‘brighter’ colours I use, are still dulled down though, I don’t use bright colours in the redesign haha.

My colour scheme was chosen, so it was nice for me to look at, but also it’s easy on your eyes as a reader when you blog hop. I’m just trying to save your eye sight here people.

Reasons Why I May Run Away From Your Blog

Your blogs appearance is a really key part to your blog. It’s the first thing people will see when they arrive on your home page, or if they go via a link to a specific post. Your layout, design, colours they matter. We’re all busy folk, and we’re probably less likely to stick around your blog if the layout is a hot mess. But I thought I’d share some personal reasons, specific to yours truly, as to why I may run from your blog.

You use bright colours and have a white background ~ Sophia @ Bookwyrming Thoughts pointed out a while ago I may be the only one who doesn’t like white backgrounds. I’m sorry, I just…they hurt my eyes. The only reason I’ll entertain staying is if I know you outside the blog, or I hopped onto a specific post.

Wix ~ just in general I don’t like Wix. If you blog on Wix, I’m sorry, I’d blog hop to you but genuinely it takes my netbook a good 3-5 minutes to load your site. I also really hate the layout of Wix. So unless I’m tagged in something or I get a link specifically asking me to check out this post, I avoid Wix like the plague.

Blogger ~ I have a love hate relationship with Blogger. Basically my screen size is small meaning your blog doesn’t fit my screen. I don’t think Blogger has responsive layouts, otherwise this wouldn’t be an issue cause that’s literally my main issue. I can’t see everything on your blog at once, I have to scroll along the bottom to see your side bar.

Your Navigation is a hot mess ~ if I arrive at your site, and your menus are all of the place, or you have two pages within the menu. No search bar, no nothing to help me navigate your site. Imma leave and find someone else with a blinding white background who has least got their navigation sorted. Navigation is so important guys! I can’t stress that enough.

Full length posts on home page ~ I know some themes don’t enable you to have excerpts showing on your home page. I get that. I don’t like it and I still may run but I get it. When I scrolls through your home page I don’t want to see the posts content in one go, I want to skim through see what you have on offer. Equally if your layout is set to a column and not grid, this makes it more painful. Cause you have to scroll past the full post, before seeing the next one. EXCERPTS guys, they’re a life saver, it means people will probably stay longer cause wow they can see what you post.

Personally they are some of the main reasons I may run from your blog. Also if I see you post mostly book reviews, I’ll run. I’m not a huge fan of reading book reviews, unless I’ve read the book. I’m hoping to change that habit, but we’ll see.

I’d also like to give a MASSIVE shout out and eternal love and thanks to these bookbloggers below. You guys are awesome, thank you for helping me out when I stuck. For listening to me yell in the discord chat and to Evelina @ Avalinah’s Books thank you for creating that chat. We’re a weird family on there, but a family none the less. If you guys want to join the New Bloggers Discord Chat then reach out to Evelina or Lauren – just DM them asking bout it.

How long have you been blogging for? Was anything I mentioned helpful or did you already know it? Thoughts on my reasoning, for going with pastel colours?
