There are some tropes we just can’t stand, whether it be love triangles or the damsel in distress, however there are also a few tropes we end up falling for. Today I’m going to be sharing some of my all time favourite romance tropes!
This post is part of Bookending Autumn 2019 and this prompt is from the lovely Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads
Autumn is for walks in the brisk air, drinking lattes, wearing matching scarves and hats, jumping in piles of leaves… wait! Is this sounding a little tropey to you? Let’s talk about some of our fave (and not so fave) romance tropes.
There’s only a few times that I can stand this trope in a book, for the most part though I can’t stand insta-love. You don’t just see someone, meet them and then fall in love instantly. At least I don’t think you do, you may be lusting for them but love isn’t the same as lust my friends.
I adore slow burns. They make me swoon, when you have cute scenes littered throughout the book. My favourite types of slow burns are usually in urban fantasy though, however I also adore them in contemporary/romance books particularly if its what I call a predictable contemporary . Where you know they’re gonna end up together because you can really relish the sweet scenes without stressing over if they’re going to be torn apart.
Enemies To Lovers
I like enemies to lovers to an extent. However if it’s being done to a couple where the relationship is more abusive than loving…then I’m sorry but I’m not down for that. This trope can work really well though if its just enemies to lovers, like you don’t have to hate your enemy with a burning passion…well I guess it depends on the situation.
I’m not sure if this trope counts but I’m throwing it in here anyway because I’ve recently been reading more adult paranormal romance and alpha male types can go choke. Seriously I don’t care if they’re human, a werewolf or a broomstick! (though I’m likely to shove that broomstick somewhere unpleasant xD) The alpha male trope where they’re possessive, dominant (as well as 9/10 they have a broken backstory which the female character doesn’t know about) and this somehow turns the chick on? I mean I get it to a point…but there’s a line where it goes from a turn on to a turn off and lemme find the nearest hardback to knock this bugger out. *sniffs*
If you’ve done this prompt lemme know in the comments and I’ll do my best to hop over and read your post! Talking in general though, what’s your favourite trope, the one you’ll never get sick of? For me I think it’s either a well executed love triangle or slow burn.
